The Tower of Hercules is the oldest Roman lighthouse in the world and the only one still in service. It was built at the end of the 1st or beginning of the 2nd century, during the time of the Roman Empire, by an architect from Coimbra named Caius Sevius Lupus. Its light has always been a beacon for navigators.
The current exterior shell dates from the 18th century, designed by Eustaquio Giannini.
The Tower of Hercules is located on the north coast of the city, at an altitude of 50 metres.
In the surrounding area is the Tower of Hercules Sculpture Park.
The Tower of Hercules has been listed as a World Heritage Site since 2009.
