A Coruña recovers the Bicycle Day after 15 years without celebration

This initiative aims to promote the use of this means of transport in a sustainable tourist destination.

A Coruña recovers, after 15 years, the Bicycle Day, an initiative jointly organised by the City Council and the Galician Association of Sports Journalists (Agaxorde) with the aim of promoting the use of this means of transport among citizens and instilling in participants notions of road safety. In addition, this project also seeks to promote the image of the city as a sustainable tourist destination.

'Inés Rey's government wanted to give new impetus to our sustainable mobility policies by recovering an activity that is key for both children and adults to increasingly use a sustainable means of transport and that guarantees healthy lifestyle habits', said Gonzalo Castro, Councillor for Culture and Tourism. Thus, from the 16th to the 22nd of this month, this municipal initiative will take place in the city, with the most outstanding activities being an exhibition on the history of cycling in A Coruña (which will last until the 29th) in the O Parrote promenade, with photographs from the late 19th century, and the recovery of the Bicycle Day, after 15 years.

This last event will take place on Sunday 22nd. Participation will be free of charge, subject to compulsory registration, and will start and finish at the O Parrote promenade at 10.30 am. Participants will run a 12-kilometre route along the promenade, classified as the largest in continental Europe and one of the most iconic areas of the city. They will pass in front of the Tower of Hercules, a World Heritage Site, and will circulate to the surroundings of the Riazor sports complex.

Registration opened on Friday 30 May and more than 200 people have already confirmed their participation. The first 600 registrations will receive a free gift. Visitors who come to A Coruña on the 22nd and want to participate in the family and sustainable day of the Bicycle Day will be able to use, free of charge, bicycles from the municipal BiciCoruña service and, in addition, they will receive a backpack with a series of gifts.

The registration period will close on Friday 20 June at 14.00 hours. The collection of badges and backpacks for those registered will take place at the Cuatro Caminos Shopping Centre on Friday 20 June, from 17.00 to 20.00, and on Saturday 21 June, from 10.00 to 20.00.

In addition, on Monday 16 June, a talk on road safety education and the use of bicycles and other VMPs in cities will be held in the auditorium of the Ágora Social and Cultural Centre. This activity will be aimed at educational centres and will start at 11.00 a.m.

The Bicycle Day has a solidarity character and will allow the collection of bicycles, which will be restored and subsequently delivered to families in vulnerable situations, along with sports equipment, thus promoting inclusion and access to sport for all people.
