Welcome to the city in fiesta!
Although most of A Coruña's festivities are held in the summer, the city is known for its lively personality and for knowing how to use any excuse to fill the streets with activity.
At the beginning of the year, the first event marked on any city calendar is the Entroido, our Carnival. For a week, the music of festive troupes fills the streets, where you can see the classic choqueiros. The epicentre of these celebrations is in Calle de la Torre. As for the dates, there are two that are especially important: the Thursday of Comadres and Ash Wednesday, with the burial of the sardine.
Another of the festivals that defines the character of A Coruña is San Xoán, declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest. On the night of 23-24 June, the shortest night of the year, the meigas come to the beaches of A Coruña to make wishes by the bonfires, in accordance with tradition. Once again, sardines have a special place in this celebration, which along with churrasco (flame-grilled ribs) make up the traditional gastronomy of this date.
August sees the arrival of the city's main festivities, the María Pita Festivals. A month of concerts, fairs, exhibitions and cultural activities organised under the name of our heroine, María Pita, for the enjoyment of locals and visitors alike.
