A Coruña was awarded yesterday the prize for 'Best Tourism Sustainability Project' at the 2026 National Geographic Travel Readers' Choice Awards. The city took first place after the publication's readers themselves recognised its commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. Among the finalists for this award were projects submitted by Visit València, Caminos Naturales, Royal Caribbean, Agaete, MSC and Barceló Regen.

The manager of the A Coruña Tourism and Congress Consortium, Antón Álvarez Olmo, attended the event to receive the award, where he highlighted that 'A Coruña has been working towards and committed to more sustainable tourism for years, and receiving an award like this means that the City Council and the Consortium are doing things right'. Álvarez also emphasised the motivation this award provides to "ensure that citizens and tourists enjoy a cosmopolitan, accessible and sustainable city".

Under Inés Rey's administration, projects have been carried out to improve and refurbish parks and gardens, as well as initiatives to preserve and conserve the natural environment, such as at the Tower of Hercules and its surroundings, which have been declared a Natural Area of Local Interest thanks to their rich flora and fauna.

The BiciCoruña project is also worth highlighting. Its cycle paths, stretching over 50 km, are a major tourist attraction for those wishing to discover the city's cultural, architectural and scenic heritage without overlooking its natural features.

In this fourth edition of the National Geographic Traveller Readers' Choice Awards 2026, there were a total of 98 nominees competing in 14 categories related to gastronomy, sustainability and accommodation. Voting took place between 22nd January and 22nd February this year.
